Robert Antoniac Obituary, Death Cause – The Old Saybrook Fire Department shares their condolences with the family and friends of Veteran Firefighter Robert Antoniac Sr #207 as they share the news of his passing. Firefighter Antoniac joined the department on February 6, 1968, making his official debut on that day. On March 4, 1969, he became a full member of the organization and was given his official membership card.
He served on the Executive Committee both in 1971 and 1972, the years in which he was a member of the committee. As a result of the votes cast by the general public, he was included on the Veterans List on October 1, 1974. At nine o’clock on the morning of December 26, 1969, Firefighter Antoniac was one of four firefighters who participated in the rescue of a duck hunter who had become stuck in the ice at South Cove.
Firefighter Antoniac spent a sizeable portion of his career seeing to it that the amenities at Fireman’s Field were maintained in a satisfactory manner. Because of his skill as a craftsman and his early membership in the organization, he was one of the first people to contribute to the construction of the facilities at Firemans Field.
The duck hunter had been trying to shoot a duck when he fell through the ice. In addition, for his entire term in office, the fire department fulfilled the role of the town’s primary supplier of ambulance treatment in the years leading up to the founding of the Old Saybrook Ambulance Association in 1974. This role continued after the association was formed. He made a contribution toward the process of replacing the ambulance and making sure that it continued to function properly.
