Larry Hickey Obituary, Death Cause – Our hearts are deeply saddened again by the news of the passing of yet another one of our former lead shepherds. Pastor Larry Hickey, 70, recently went to be with the Lord after a season of illness and physical challenges. Pastor Larry briefly served as youth pastor at First Assembly of God, now our own Victory Church, under Pastor Hartley Wigfield, eventually becoming the Potomac District Youth Director.
He was kind, loving, and spoke tenderly to the hurting heart with prophetic insight. He loved to pray and lead the congregation in both prayer and worship. Pastor Larry was a warm and beloved friend to many, inspiring countless men and women to enter the ministry, and simply being there for so many more with his prayerful and comforting presence. One of his favorite scriptures was Revelation 12:11: ”And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”
In 1993, he succeeded Pastor Wigfield as lead pastor of First Assembly, and served in that capacity until 2006, when he was elected superintendent of the Potomac District, overseeing the network’s 300+ churches. Pastor Larry was a man of great vision, heartfelt compassion, intercessory prayer, and discipling relationships. In 2005, under his leadership, First Assembly of God relocated from 1317 South Pleasant Valley Road to a new building on 2870 Middle Road and was renamed Victory Church.
We have the blest assurance that he is rejoicing and dancing in heaven (as he often did on the platform during praise and worship), and, in the words of the great spiritual, he is “done with the troubles of the world”, and at rest with the Lord Jesus Christ. Please keep Pastor Larry’s family lifted up in prayer as they process their grief and loss.
