Sue Johnson Obituary, Death Cause – We are sorry to inform you that Councillor Sue Johnson has died away. It is with deep regret that we have to share this news with you at this time. After being elected in St. Ann’s in 2007, Sue, age 65, served as a Labour councillor for a total of 16 years. She was a steadfast champion for the people she served and lived in the ward that she was responsible for. During her time on the council, we are confident that many of you will have had the opportunity to get to know her and work closely with her.
She formerly served as the Chair of the Children and Young People’s Scrutiny Committee and sat on the Corporate Parenting Board for our looked-after children. In addition, she was a member of the committee. Between the years of 2017 and 2019, she served as the Vice-Chair of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee. Before to that, she was a member of the Joint City and County Health Scrutiny Committee between the years of 2007 and 2014.
She was a strong advocate for the residents of her ward, especially during the time that she served as Chair of the Area Committee for the East side of the city. She was a member of a group of ward councillors who held public surgeries twice a week in order to assist local residents with the issues that they were facing. She would frequently come up with innovative approaches to communicating with the local populace, such as her well-attended “Tea and Cake Consultation” gatherings, which took place in warden-assisted and senior citizens’ housing complexes. At these gatherings, she would talk to the locals and hear their feedback while they enjoyed a slice of cake and a cup of tea. She was a stalwart supporter of the St. Ann’s Carnival, the local tree-planting initiative, and the effort to ensure that local clubs held events and activities for children during the school holidays.
